Our objective is to better understand how tailored policy mixes can drive urban mobility transitions. To achieve this, we take an inter- and transdisciplinary approach that brings together qualitative and quantitative methods. Our research design integrates:
This integrated approach enables both scientific insight and practical relevance, fostering a shared learning process between researchers, policymakers, and citizens.
The project is grounded in empirical research conducted in four European cities, located in Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, and Italy. These cities – ranging from 30,000 to 200,000 inhabitants – reflect diverse socio-spatial conditions and policy frameworks. Despite differences in size and progress toward sustainable mobility, they share a common ambition: to reduce car dependency and promote climate-neutral, socially just urban mobility systems.
A key outcome of the project will be the Mobility Policy Mix Toolbox – a strategic resource designed to support cities and policymakers in navigating the complex politics of mobility transitions. The toolbox will offer guidance for creating effective combinations of policy instruments, fostering institutional, procedural, and social innovations that collectively shift the urban mobility landscape toward sustainability.
